To the North!

As some know, and others may not, I got a 6 month job in Fairbanks, Alaska that starts April 1st. I will be working as a School Garden Coordinator. I will help maintain the garden, hire and work with students in the garden and work with teachers to implement lessons plans in a garden setting. Check out www.calypsofarm.org They are the non-profit farm that hired me and coordinates the school gardens.

The task: 4,760 miles, 8 states and covering some of the most isolated areas of Canada in 13 days. Alaska, coined as the last frontier, is our largest state with the smallest population. There are numerous ways to plan a trip to Alaska. Flying would be the most obvious, in about 8 hours you can arrive in the state that hosts the North Pole. Or with a combination of trains, boats, planes and/or driving, you can gain maximum variety for minimal stress (although a small fortune may be required). Colby and I chose to drive the entire distance. The option is probably not the least stressful, nor the least costly, but it is sure to be full of adventure and new sights. So two peoples’ possessions preparing for 6 months and clothes for all seasons, plus a 50-pound dog will all stuffed into my five-seated car.

The first half of the itinerary we completed from the opposite direction only 5 months ago, in November. With experience under our belt we hope our time on the road in the US goes smoothly.
