Podcast: Democracy Now

The highlight of this leg of the drive was our lovely Couchsurfing hosts. If you aren’t familiar with Couchsurfing (CS), here is a quick rundown. CS is a network where you post a profile about yourself, your roommates and any available space you have in your home. Or if you are a traveler, about you and your travels. The host opens his or her home to a traveler for a night or two. No money is exchanged, just good company. I know many people may read this and think “That sounds unsafe, what if he/she is a serial killer?!?” But the beauty of CS is that you are opening your home and heart to a stranger. People who participate in the network believe in the goodness of mankind and the kindness of strangers. Also, there are protections within the network. There is also a reference page where people can leave positive or negative feedback about you, identity confirmation, etc.

I had already contacted a CS couple in Dawson’s Creek who said they would host us. Cynthia and Randy live about 10 minutes outside of town and have impeccable reviews. We pulled up to the lovely, rural home around 6:00 pm. Cynthia welcomed us with a warm smile. She showed us our room, the bathroom and gave us snacks. Colby, Sam and I took a quick walk down the hill to visit their 5 beautiful horses. Soon Randy, her husband, drove up with another Couchsurfer from Switzerland. Within minutes we were all inside drinking wine or beer, snacking and swapping laughs and stories. They cooked us an incredible meal that included shrimp, salmon, rice and homemade bread. Afterward we retired to the living room. The men switched to scotch while the ladies opened another bottle of wine. We talked and laughed late into the evening and finally went to bed around midnight. We casually woke up the next morning to enjoy another delicious meal, coffee, eggs, bacon, hash brown and toast. They were a joy to be with and were the highlight of Canada thus far.
