Day 5: Medford, OR to Seattle, WA (454 miles)

Avg. Gas $2.89
Music: Kei$ha, The Decemberists, Lady Gaga
Podcast: This American Life “Save the day”

Interstate 5 from Medford to Portland doesn’t display the prettiest parts of Oregon. Add cloudy weather, traffic and a very familiar route and you get the terrible music we were listening to. If you don’t know who Kei$ha or Lady Gaga is, I would guess you can deduce the quality of music from the names. Sometimes you can judge books by their cover. But Lady Gaga does have her purpose and that is car dancing. If you are ever stuck in traffic, turn your frustrated energy into silly energy. You might as well be happy and burn some calories if you are stuck in your car and not moving.

Seattle tested my patience. First we got stuck in traffic for 40 minutes. Then we got lost downtown for another half hour. I think the last thing I would ever want when finishing a 7-hour drive is to extend 20 miles into an hour and half more in the car. It’s truly terrible.

We pulled in front of Joy and Bratton’s apartment around 6 p.m. Their place had an exceptional view of Seattle. Also it was a short downhill walk to the harbor. So Colby, Sam and I went to get some fresh air and look at the boats.
We looked at all the different shapes and sizes of the boats at the pier, everything from yachts to fishing schooners. The moon reflected off the still water. The quiet evening stroll was the perfect way to unwind. After getting back to the apartment we spent some time figuring out logistics for the next day. We all went to bed early. We had a long day ahead of us. Canada was our next stop.

  1. Since I have misplaced my ipod, apparently for good, and my CD player has offically decided it has retired from working effectively, I too have learned to find some sort of appreciation for the Lady Gaga and Kei$ha types that grace the radio stations. Rihanna and Timbaland also start to become dance friendly after time. Still, I am REALLY ready for a new ipod...

  2. Thanks for the much needed laugh at the end of the day before "tax season" is officially over. The visual of you car dancing to Lady Gaga brought forth a good chuckle before I turn in. Look forward to reading the rest - glad you made it to Alaska!
