I lazily woke up this morning to see that 5 more inches of snow had blanketed the already white ground. With only a 5 hour drive ahead of us today, we enjoyed the morning with no need to rush. Breakfast included eggs, toast, cheese grits and Piñon coffee. Delicious! Even though the ride was relatively short, I got in the car already in a foul mood. My body was restless and my mind anxious. I tried reading, crocheting, doing a crossword, napping…nothing could satiate me for more than 10 minutes. Finally I decided to pout and stare out the window. The daunting task of 11 mores days on the road was filling my thoughts, I began having second thoughts. Why didn’t we fly like any other sane person would do?

Eventually the landscape drew me in. We left the Sandia mountains in the rearview mirror and headed toward the taller, snow capped peaks of Flagstaff. The traffic moved in a steady stream. Spring breakers migrated both east and west. Marks of modernity permeated the roadside. A constant stream of billboards and fast food chains drifted past. Soon enough, however, I lost track of time and place. I stepped back into days of the old west. Trains passed by, adding movement and perspective to the vast desert mesa. My thoughts drifted to an old John Wayne western. I imagined men on horseback exploring the canyons. I pictured them coupled between the immense brilliant blue sky and the vast crimson desert.

We arrived in Flagstaff in time for dinner. We stayed with our friend Brian, his wife and their 4 beautiful daughters, all under the age of 6. Needless to say the girls did most of the entertaining for the night. With a good night’s rest ahead, we were preparing to cover a lot of ground the next day.
