Day 10: Whitehorse, YT to Fairbanks, AK (589 miles)

Avg. Gas $3.46

We were going to make it. The journey that seemed so overwhelming and long when I was in Arizona was now coming to a close. In only a few hours we would once again be driving across an international line. This time we would be entering Alaska! I could hardly pay attention to the scenery as we were leaving the Yukon. I was ready to be at my destination, to be done driving, to finally get to my new home.

We entered Alaska without a hiccup. This time they did check Sam’s records and ask about the fruit
we had in the car. After a quick examination though, we entered Palin country. Within minutes I saw signs for Jesus and his churches. “Welcome back to the good ol’ USA” I thought. Along a flat road we followed the Alaska mountain range for hours. Silliness permeated the car. Colby and I were filled with pent up energy and nervous excitement. Finally we were seeing signs that were counting our miles down to Fairbanks. And happily I watched as they dropped from triple digit to double digit. About 12 miles outside of Fairbanks we passed through the town of North Pole where everyday is Christmas. Santa was everywhere, advertising anything from his Christmas themed amusement park to the local gravel yard. In North Pole, Alaska one doesn’t look further than Kris Kringle to find his marketing niche.
We pulled into Fairbanks with open eyes and wandering minds. What would our life here look like? Would we like the house? Our roommates? The job? Questions invaded my mind from every direction. But nothing could be answered. Only time will tell….

(We also finished listening to the book Middlesex on our last day. Perfect timing. I highly recommend the book)
